My ocean-freight prepaid shipment (Chicago-Istanbul to personal effects) was taken into customs by this local company in Istanbul. I had shipped personal books weighing about 250 kilos. As a graduate student, I had thought that shipping was the inexpensive end of transporting books. Little did I know.
The company did not contact me when my stuff arrived. I had to locate the company and its phone number. When I called, my books had already arrived and warehousing charges began to accrue. This was because they had transported my shipment to a warehouse based on extremely questionable "order" without bothering to call me. (Government officials tell me that contacting me was the appropriate action to take for personal shipment at customs.)
The company asked a total sum of $498 just to "release" my shipment documents. (The amount includes NEITHER the warehousing NOR the customs AND the customs agent charges.)
The representatives of this company were extremely hostile, disrespectful, and insolent. They rejected slightest responsibility at every step of the way, and kept threatening and ridiculing me at great length. Although I have retrieved my shipment now, as of now, I have not been able to retrieve the amount I paid them.
It is my personal belief that they are at the extreme end of unethical shipping business, so I thought I would let others know.
