Nightmare Company Backloads.com

Customers beware! If you are considering using Backloads.com to move your furniture you may want to read on about our experience earlier this year. Beware also that this trader operates under a few names (see below).

The company did provide us with the cheapest quote, however it came at a great cost to us in the long run.

Our goods should have taken 7-10 days to deliver consistent with what their website says but it took 26 days and only because we contacted them daily after two weeks demanding our goods. You should note not ONCE did this company advise us that the goods would be late, why they were late, not ONCE did they return calls or emails. The staff were unhelpful and rude, as were management, who advised us we just needed to wait until a driver contacted us a day before delivery which they could not tell me when this would occur. One of the managers even became abusive and swore at us when we continued to call to see where our goods were.

When our goods finally arrived 26 days later a lot of our boxes were dented and wet in parts, so were our suitcases. We had other damages including a performance bicycle badly scratched and chafed, both bikes had been dismantled against our wishes, a television panel had been ripped off, a tv trolley was damaged and our mattress was ripped in two places.

We had paid for the top transit protection cover they offered. We were advised we could make a claim for damaged goods up to 7 days after delivery which we did promptly. Two weeks later we received forms that we needed to fill in asking for every item transported and its approximate cost. We also had to go and find our own quotes and prices for the repair/replacement. We also had to provide evidence of purchase and photographic evidence of the damage. We did all that and sent the claim.

Again after weeks of not hearing anything we began our nightmare run of calling and sending follow up emails. Again not once did the company contact us to let us know what was happening. The claims department refused to take our calls, staff would hang up or pass us on to management who advised us that the claims department would not talk to us over the phone and the only communication we would receive from them will be in writing. We called/emailed this company over 30 times without success.

Three months later we received a letter simply stating because I had signed for the goods I had accepted the goods were in good condition by signing for them and therefore they were not accepting liability. Read the small print, if you sign they have a small disclaimer under the signature that states “received in good condition and order”.

We are currently seeking legal advice to instigate legal proceedings against them.

We are not the only ones. In our investigations we found this quote from Consumer Affairs Victoria's 2006 annual report:

"Interstate Taxi Trucks/Regal Removals/ Backloads.com/Cobb & Co CAV continues to receive complaints concerning this trader, alleging goods damaged in transit, loss of property, delays in collection and/or delivery, and under-quoting.

Consumers report that their complaints are not dealt with appropriately and that staff and the company owner are often rude and unhelpful. This trader has been inflexible when contacted by CAV and at the end of the financial year was under investigation."

Yet another bad review for backloads. com!! They 'lost' part of my consignment, will not accept a claim form, debited money from my credit card without my knowldege or permission and after even putting in a formal complaint with the dept of consmer and employee protection, backloads.com still refuse to come to the party. The Dpt of consumer & employee protection have advised me that they have hit a brick wall with backloads. com and they i should proceed to small claims court!!

Much the same as above, they took my money, promised transit time of 4-6 days, picked up all of my worldly belongings, and now it seems, refuse to give me back my possessions.

The job was to transfer ALL of my possessions, neatly packed up into 10 large moving boxes, from Ballarat in Victoria, to Coffs Harbour in NSW.

It has now been 25 days since my belongings were picked up and there is no sign that I will be getting them delivered.

Every attempt I have made to try and get information on what is happening with my possessions I am met with defensive and downright nasty behaviour from the staff answering the phones.

On 6 separate occasions now I have been given a delivery date that has not been fulfilled. Not once have I received a phone call to explain why the delivery did not take place, instead, when I call up to enquire about what happened, more defensive "'it's not my fault'" excuses.

Bottom line - These are all the possessions I have in this world, I own them, they belong to me, and I want them back.

I honestly believe that a dead elephant and a quadriplegic giraffe could run a company better than this...

I can add to the litany of bad reviews for backloads.com. I used them successfully on two or three previous occasions to move a small number of items from Melbourne/Canberra to Sydney. Recently however, I had a nightmare experience.

Backloads picked up my items from Melbourne on the designated day from my cousin's home. She reported that the driver was "extremely unprofessional." The items were due to arrive at my home in Sydney two days later but did not. I waited a further day then called backloads. They informed me that the driver had been told that I could not accept delivery on the designated day and that the goods had been delivered to storage. This was NOT true. I was never contacted by the driver and had been home all day and all the following day awaiting delivery.

What ensued was over a month of almost daily calls to backloads to try to arrange delivery of my goods. On one occasion the staff member who answered my calls admitted that the driver never attempted to deliver my goods on the designated day but instead delivered them straight to storage. I was then told that I would have to pay a redelivery fee to obtain the goods.

On another occasion I was told by the staff member who answered that they thought my goods had already been delivered.

On almost every occasion I was told that the goods would be delivered at the end of that week and that I would be contacted the afternoon prior. This did not happen for four consecutive weeks.

Finally, when I did receive contact that the goods would be delivered, the time they proposed did not suit as I was flying interstate. I told them (very, very reluctantly) that I would have to reschedule delivery. They agreed to that and then the goods turned up anyway, at the same time as my taxi to the airport!

On several occasions during this debacle I was told that the 'Operations Manager' would return my call but he never did. I also emailed a complaint via the backloads website but never had a response from anyone.

To top it all off they charged me an extra $185 and couldn't explain what it was for.

All in all this company is a NIGHTMARE to deal with and should indeed be investigated by consumer affairs.

My advice: Don't even consider dealing with them.

I travel interstate every couple of years for work. Normally from Sydney to Melbourne. I have used Backloads on 4 occasions. The first time they ran 2 days late with the delivery. But they did warn me prior to booking that it could take between 1 and 4 days to arrive. The other 3 times went very smoothly. So from my experience, they were pretty good.

I googled too late and regrettably used this circus. By all accounts from the nightmare reviews I have read, I am lucky to have even got our gear. Same issues, unprofessional, extra costs added for no reason, bullying, rudeness and a personal threat that if I pursued a complaint that "we know where you live"
